        Belva Ann Lockwood of Owego became the
        first female attorney permitted to argue
        a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

        * Owego native Esther Hobart Morris,
        orphaned at age 11, became the first
        female to hold public office in the U.S.
        when she was appointed to serve as
        justice of the peace in Wyoming in 1870.
        Her statue is in the Capitol as Wyoming's
        representative in Statuary Hall.
